Is the "ick" real or are we just self-sabotaging?

Nicole Wright · February 1, 2026

I keep seeing people talk about getting "the ick" over the most minor things — the way someone chews, their laugh, how they park their car. Are we genuinely turned off or are we finding excuses to leave because we're scared of intimacy? I got the ick with my now-husband early on because he wore cargo shorts. CARGO SHORTS. If I had followed the ick I would have missed out on the love of my life. Can we discuss?

Your ex sounds like my ex's long-lost twin. The audacity of these men.

Just went through this exact situation. It gets better, I promise.

SAME. I'm so tired of being the only one putting in effort.

I think 6 months is fine IF you've had all the hard conversations first.

This really resonated with me. Going through something so similar right now.

My non-negotiable is emotional intelligence. If he can't name his feelings, we're not compatible.
