Why you love the way you love — and how to change it.
Attachment theory is the single most useful lens for understanding why the same relationship pattern keeps repeating. Developed by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth and extended into adult romance by Hazan and Shaver, it holds that the way your earliest caregivers responded to your needs built an internal template for what closeness feels like — safe, unpredictable, or dangerous.
That template shows up as four broad adult styles. Secure people can ask for reassurance without shame. Anxious people monitor the relationship for signs of withdrawal and protest when they find them. Avoidant people feel their independence threatened by closeness and pull back to breathe. Disorganized (fearful-avoidant) people want both at once, which is exhausting.
The most important finding is the one most people never hear: attachment style is not a personality diagnosis and it is not permanent. Roughly a quarter of adults shift style over a lifetime, usually through a stable relationship, therapy, or deliberate practice. This is called earned security, and it is the goal of nearly everything in this collection.

Secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant (also called disorganized). Secure is the most common, at roughly 50-55% of adults; anxious and avoidant each account for about 20-25%, and fearful-avoidant for a small remainder.
Yes. Attachment style is a learned expectation, not a fixed trait. Longitudinal studies find roughly one in four adults shifts style over time, most often toward security through a consistently responsive partner, individual therapy, or deliberate practice in naming needs directly.
Each confirms the other's expectation. The anxious partner's pursuit reads as intensity, and the avoidant partner's distance reads as a challenge worth winning. The pairing feels familiar rather than good, which is why it is both common and draining.
